Review on Ben Tunnicliffe at Sennen
Following his success with The Tolcarne Inn in Newlyn critically acclaimed chef Ben Tunnicliffe, who held a Michelin star at the Abbey Restaurant for five years has taken over the lease of the Beach restaurant in Sennen Cove, renaming it Ben Tunnicliffe at Sennen. This iconic building which was originally built by the Shannon family who have owned the restaurant since the 1950's, is gloriously situated on the beach at Sennen with breathtaking views across the Cornish bay. The dining room has a welcoming and relaxed vibe in keeping with its setting, Newlyn School of Art pictures adorn the walls and surfboards can be found resting against the wooden pillars. In summer months the decked terrace is immensely popular, as guests sit back and unwind while taking in the views.
Ben makes the most of seasonally sourced produce from small independent suppliers, for a regularly changing menu to reflect the very best of the local larder. To start you might opt for the tempura Cornish seafood, chilli jam and guacamole or maybe the chicken liver parfait paired with onion marmalade, toast and leaves. Main courses offer beer battered fish, hand cut chips and homemade tartare sauce or meat fans will enjoy the confit Cornish chicken leg, mushroom lentils and garlic creamed spinach. To finish there's sticky toffee pudding, vanilla ice cream and toffee sauce or a dark chocolate mousse and honey roast pear. Children are made welcome and have their own menu which offers good value.
To complement the food there's an interesting wine list that roams the globe, featuring a collection that offers something for everyone in terms of both taste and budget.
