Review on Indian Essence

Indian Essence opened its doors on 26 November 2012 situated on a busy shopping parade in Petts Wood, in the London Borough of Bromley. It is a joint venture between acclaimed chef and television personality Atul Kochhar and restaurateur Jitindar Singh

Kochhar has been honoured by many restaurant guides, with one star in the Michelin Guide for his Benares restaurant in Mayfair which opened in April 2003. He opened his first restaurant on the outskirts of Dublin in 2008 called Ananda and also has a restaurant on P&O's Azura cruise ship called Sindhu. Jitindar Singh started his career working for the prestigious Taj group of hotels before moving to England in 2003, managing various restaurants including Tamasha in Bromley, where he picked up the highly respected Veetee Tiffin Cup award in 2009.

The light and airy restaurant is decked out in neutral tones with a smart minimalist décor, walls are clad with horizontal planking, modern tubular lighting hangs from the ceiling over tables dressed in fine napery, set against cream leather banquettes and chairs.

The food is prepared with classic techniques to enhance the taste, textures and aesthetic of each dish. Typical starters chosen from the a la carte menu could be Karara Keda, soft shell crab with corn and apple salad or Murg Tiranga, basil infused grilled chicken fillets, mango pickle, marinated chicken kebab and crisp fried chicken salad. Main courses follow the theme with Samudri Khajana Do Plaza, king prawn, scallop, razor clam, salmon and squid with tomato-onion sauce or a succulent Katchi Mirch Ka Gosht, slow cooked lamb neck fillet. To finish there are artfully displayed desserts such as chocolate and peanut butter parfait with sugarcane ice-cream, or a rose and raspberry scented Calcutta style cheese cake.

There is an extensive wine list to complement the dishes with a broad range of selection from all the premier growing regions, together with a well-crafted cocktail menu.
