Review on Pool House Hotel, North by North West Restaurant
Widely regarded as one of the most romantic retreats in the Highlands, Pool House is a fascinating refuge perfectly placed by the shores of Loch Ewe. Owned by the Harrison family, it's a riot of eclectic opulence, from the wickedly cosy Victorian library to the extraordinary bedrooms inspired by all corners of the globe - especially India.
The North by North West Restaurant continues the theme, as diners sit beneath a ceiling bejewelled with hundreds of hand-painted stars. A zodiac fresco, seafaring charts and a seven-foot gilded compass point up the restaurant's name, and the the views are tremendous (don't be surprised to spot seals frolicking in the nearby shallows).
Holding sway in the kitchen is accomplished head chef John Moir whose innovative dishes are prepared from the highest quality ingredients. Moir harvests some of their fresh fruit, herbs and vegetables from the hotel's garden, as well as free range eggs from their own chicken and ducks. Other ingredients are sourced from within a 10 mile radius in order to ensure maximum freshness and seasonality. To start choose stir-fried local squid with garlic, garden herbs, vermouth and cream, followed by wild leek and garlic soup, while main courses embrace pan fried breast of Goosenargh duck, roasted potato, spinach, wild mushrooms, Port and shallot sauce. As a finale consider Drambuie panna cotta, blood peach sorbet and fresh raspberries or maybe the Farmhouse cheese platter, oatcakes and wafers, and quince. The wine list is equally dazzling in its choice and range.
