Review on Los Zarzales Restaurant
Los Zarzales, meaning bramble bushes in English is a popular restaurant in Mallorca's most northerly town of Port de Pollença. Tucked away in a quiet side street, not far from the seafront, it was opened in June 1998 by a husband and wife team, Christian Escolar who heads the kitchen, while Yolanda warmly welcomes guests at front of house. The restaurant has a tastefully decorated dining room with a delightful summer courtyard, where you can enjoy al fresco dining under pretty illuminated parasols, amidst the heady scent of the flowers.
Escolar produces traditional Mallorcan and contemporary cuisine using first-class locally sourced ingredients. You might opt for a starter of baby broad beans with Iberian ham and "Botifarra" sausage perfumed with mint or king prawns sautéed with Sobrasada. Main courses offer an intriguing mix of flavours with grilled salmon with Piña Colada or "Lomo con Col y Gambas" succulent pork wrapped in cabbage with a rich sauce of tomato, prawns and Mallorcan black pudding. The speciality of the house is baby goat of Sierra Tramontana with garlic, as well as their roast suckling pig on Bay leaves and lemon.
There is a modest selection of Mallorcan and Spanish wines, including a good choice from the Pollenca area from wineries such as Mortitx and Can Vidalet. Los Zarzales also offers cooking workshops, catering for private parties and their special flamenco and live music evenings are well worth looking out for.
