Review on Zen Chinese Restaurant
In the leafy southern suburbs of the city, this well-liked, family-run Chinese restaurant is oddly located in the shell of a Church of Ireland meeting hall. Lofty ceilings testify to the origins of the building, although it is now appealingly decorated and there's ample space between tables.
The menu has a strong bias towards the spicy cooking of Szechuan, including a choice of steamed and shallow-fried dumplings with vinegar dipping sauce, shredded pork and pickled vegetable soup, and stewed fillet of beef with Chinese cabbage.
Other intriguing options might include deep-fried chicken and fish loaf, shredded squid with wild pepper and fresh chilli, and braised minced pork with tofu, Szechuan peppercorns and hot bean sauce. Vegetables and meatless dishes are also well above average. Drink tea or Asian beer.
