Review on Bel & The Dragon
The Bel & The Dragon is set in a former biscuit factory on the waterfront of the Kennet and Avon Canal, a short stroll from the centre of Reading. Opening its doors in June 2011 it's the fourth sibling in a group of country pub restaurants with branches in Windsor, Cookham, Churt, Kingsclere and Odiham. The spacious venue has been lovingly refurbished with a modern décor whilst incorporating industrial design elements. During summer months the boardwalk and the restaurant's moored boat provides an idyllic waterside setting for alfresco dining.
Ronnie Kimbugwe is the Groups Head Chef and he previously honed his skills as the Senior Sous Chef of the critically acclaimed Gordon Ramsay at Claridges. Kimbugwe together with Reading's head chef Steve Rooney have created a menu showcasing the finest seasonal modern British cuisine, with ingredients carefully sourced from local and sustainable sources.
Among the list of starters you might find peat smoked Hebridean sea trout or ravioli of confit duck and chestnuts. While main courses offer a hearty rabbit, chorizo and white bean stew served with warm chunky bread or from the Josper Grill choose the grilled half Dorset Blue lobster with warm garlic butter. For chocolate lovers there's a warm gooey triple chocolate hazelnut brownie paired with pistachio ice cream or a traditional Eton Mess, homemade meringue, fresh strawberries and Jersey cream.
The concise wine list hits the target, with plenty of lively drinking on offer together with a tasty cocktail menu.
