Review on Tony Tobin @ The Dining Room
A blue-chip culinary CV plus a serious 'celeb chef' media profile put Toby Tobin's name on the map and since becoming joint owner of Reigate's The Dining Room in 2002 he has upped his game and can now offer (in his own words) 'many of the gastronomic luxuries of top London restaurants in the gentle, relaxed surroundings of a Surrey market town'.
His menus jet rapidly from asparagus risotto with goats' cheese and basil pesto into the realms of caramelised sweet and spicy brill served with chilli and mango salsa. Meat fans also have plenty of options, ranging from sautéed veal kidneys with smoked bacon and baby onions in red wine and mustard sauce to Tobin's take on crispy aromatic duck, accompanied by wok-fried greens and an oriental broth. Desserts crank up the tempo, with wacky ideas such as 'Lemon Heaven' (iced lemon curd and yoghurt parfait with liquorice syrup).
Above the restaurant is an exclusive bar with leather sofas, alcoves and a menu that offers simpler stuff along the lines of salmon fishcakes and local sausages with big chips. The wine list is an up-to-date assortment of inviting bottles bolstered by an extra 'library' of treasures for oenophilic big spenders.
