Review on Lockwoods
Lockwoods, set in a listed building is a combination of café, bar and restaurant that opened in 2005 in the Cathedral city of Ripon. The refurbished interior is a lovely mix of old and new, with the retention of the original open brickwork, wooden floors and skylight, but with modern lighting and seating, a gleaming zinc topped bar and a state of the art kitchen. This family venue where everyone is welcome was the recipient of the No 1 Family Run Restaurant in the UK award by The Times, as well as being listed in the Which Good Food Guides 2010 and 2011.
During the day it operates as an informal café serving freshly roasted coffee, breakfast, tasty sandwiches and lunch, but in the evening the kitchen steps up a gear. Local ingredients are top of the agenda for the crowd pleasing menu, that works its way through crispy Hoi Sin belly pork with shredded carrot and coriander or ham hock and chicken terrine, pineapple pickle, homemade toasted sourdough and pickled mushrooms amongst the starters. Mains follow on with Yorkshire Dales lamb cutlets, crispy lamb breast, fondant potato, smoked beetroot and cauliflower puree or seabass fillet, pea puree, pea shoots, saffron risotto, spiced crabcake and shellfish sauce. Desserts provide an enticing mix of flavours, choose pistachio and olive oil cake, poached rhubarb and rhubarb sorbet or another popular choice is Lockwoods famous chocolate pot, with raspberry fool and shortbread. There is an excellent wine list to compliment the dishes and look out for their popular monthly special events which feature great food, wine and music.
