Review on Roade House Restaurant & Hotel
Over the years, this sturdy stone building has served as a schoolhouse and village pub, but for more than two decades it has been the domain of Chris and Sue Kewley. Despite its proximity to the M1 and the fuel-injected world of Silverstone, it manages to provide peace, relaxation and a feeling of cosseted serenity.
As the name suggests, it is first and foremost a restaurant, with the bonus of accommodation in a separate part of the building. A sky-lit bar area leads into the low-ceilinged, beamed dining room, where visitors can partake of Chris Kewley's well-tuned modern food.
Menus are fixed-price and the kitchen goes about its business without fuss or posturing. A risotto of smoked haddock with pesto might appear among the starters, alongside grilled mackerel with pickled cucumber or duck rillettes with foie gras. Seasonal main courses could feature roast partridge with Savoy cabbage and chestnuts or grilled fillet of Arctic char with pea compote, prawns and beurre blanc, while classic desserts delve into the comforting world of apple strudel or chocolate and ginger cake with marmalade sauce. Wines are arranged by style and personal preference: good bottles abound.
