Review on The Crimble, Peacock Room
You might not guess it now, but this lavish restaurant complex was originally a seventeenth-century farm cottage. Following extensive development in Victorian times and more recently during the 1980s, the Crimble now houses a choice of dining rooms and bars for every occasion.
On the food front, pride of place goes to the Peacock Room, an eye-popping extravaganza inspired by the Art Deco style of ocean liners in the 1930s. Here are mirrored ceilings, statuettes, drapes at the windows, fancy chandeliers and equally fancy patterned carpets. The kitchen plots a more contemporary course, offering starters of Loch Fyne scallops wrapped in dry-cure bacon with split pea purée or twice-baked Lancashire cheese soufflé, ahead of Goosnargh duckling with black pepper and raspberry sauce or organic salmon with brown shrimp butter, local samphire and garden peas.
A traditional grill menu is available in the separate Conservatory Restaurant, while drinks and lunchtime snacks are served in the casual setting of Cuchulainn's Irish-themed bar.
