Review on Fiacrí Country House Restaurant & Cookery School
Check directions before embarking on a trip to Enda and Ailish Hennessy's out-of-the-way restaurant on the Tipperary/Laois border. Once there, the pink-painted farmhouse looks instantly appealing and everything is as it should be. The welcome is warm and the place is kept in pristine order; there are also delightful grounds and a terrace for al fresco meals.
Five-course dinner menus follow the seasons and all the details are in place, from freshly baked rolls and made-to-order salads to hand-cut aged steaks and local seafood. Typically, you might begin with spicy crab croquettes or a salad of Clonakilty black pudding with caramelised apples before a soup (carrot and parsnip, for example). Main courses keep it simple, witness rack of Tipperary spring lamb with mint mash and rosemary jus or escalope of salmon in filo pastry with ginger and chive sauce, while desserts offer ample choice from white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake to Pavlova with passion fruit curd.
The Hennessys also run Fiacrí House as a cookery school, with regular courses throughout the year. Classes are intimate, and you get to eat everything at the end! Accommodation is available locally.
