Review on Kelly's Resort Hotel & Spa, Beaches Restaurant
Four successive generations of the Kelly family have run this redoubtable hotel, ever since William J. Kelly founded it in 1895. These days, the place is famed as a venue for all-comers, with superb facilities including a health spa and aqua club, jogging track, children's playground and even a boules pitch.
Beaches Restaurant is the hotel's fine dining option, with its opulent feel, sunny décor and famous art collection on display. Executive Chef Eugene Callaghan leads the kitchen brigade with a daily changing menu of classic European cuisine.
Fish from Killmore Quay shows up strongly on the menu in the shape of – say – seared scallops on leek and courgette tartlet or pan-fried fillet of John Dory with herb sauce. Other possibilities might include grilled Wicklow venison with wild mushroom and Madeira jus, while desserts look to the classics for passion fruit bavarois or profiteroles filled with banana cream. Kelly's wine cellar is home to a prodigious collection of bottles from around the globe.
Casual meals are also available in La Marine bistro/bar, which has its own chef and a menu that ranges from Moroccan couscous salad to roast rack of lamb with sweet potato gratin.
