Review on Sand House Hotel, The Glasshouse Restaurant
Built as a fishing lodge during the 1830s, Sand House is perched on the fringes of a two-mile-long beach beside Donegal Bay. Over the years it has developed in a château-style complex complete with a marine spa and access to three top local golf courses.
Formal meals are served in the well-appointed Glasshouse Restaurant overlooking Rossnowlagh Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The kitchen makes good use of local produce for international menus in the classic mould. Expect herb profiteroles stuffed with crabmeat, mussel chowder laced with Guinness and herb-crusted cod with seafood sauce, alongside honey-roast Silverhill duckling with orange sauce, stuffed loin of lamb on spring onion champ, and sirloin steak with béarnaise sauce.
To conclude, there are old-school desserts including strawberry cheesecake, Pavlova with fresh raspberries and honeycomb ice cream with golden butterscotch sauce. Locally smoked salmon, fresh Donegal Bay oysters and mussels are served throughout the day in the cosy lounge bar.
