Review on The Cricketers Arms
The Cricketers Arms overlooks Rickling Green's famous old cricket pitch, this well-tended eighteenth-century inn enjoys a lovely quiet location in a rural Essex backwater, although it's less than ten miles from Stansted Airport. It still functions as a popular local watering hole with real ales tapped direct from the cask in the pleasantly mellow bar, but much of the emphasis is now on food.
There are two relaxed dining areas, done out in contemporary style with pastel colour schemes, wood floors and high-quality modern furnishings. The kitchen gives the nod to standard pub grub, although it pays to explore the more ambitious restaurant menu, which moves into the realms of pan-fried foie gras on mango brioche with port reduction, fillet of sea bass on turmeric potatoes with basil and chilli oil dressing, and rump of Welsh lamb with champ, tomato and mint salsa. Outside is a fascinating Japanese-style terraced garden.
