The richly appetising name 'Goose Fat & Garlic' might conjure up juicy thoughts of provincial France, but this popular restaurant/wine bar inhabits another world - in this case the pretty Hertfordshire village of Sawbridgeworth. It's a busy, inviting place done out in contemporary style with big windows, dark wood floors and warm colour schemes setting the mood in the bar and the dining room.
Modern European food with a few oriental add-ons is the order of the day, and the full menu might open with confit of duck and ham hock terrine or deep-fried goats' cheese with pineapple and sweet chilli salsa. A big choice of main courses could range from roast rack of lamb with ratatouille and wild mushroom sauce to deep-fried monkfish on sweet pimento mash with wilted pak choi, while desserts are mostly standards such as crêpes Suzette or sticky toffee pudding.
There's also a 48-dish tapas menu for those who fancy grazing casually at the bar: expect a mixed bag of morsels ranging from tortillas, chorizo in red wine and asparagus wrapped in Serrano ham to hummus and tzatziki. The 40-bin wine list is bolstered by a decent selection of world beers.
