Review on The Victoria
TV chef Paul Merrett (ex-Greenhouse and The Farm) has teamed up with restaurateur Greg Bellamy to take over Sheen's 100-year-old Victoria pub/dining room/hotel in a leafy residential area not far from Richmond Park. The Victoria is exceedingly family-friendly, with smiling staff, crowd-pleasing Sunday roasts and a kids' play area in the garden (barbecues in summer).
Most of the foodie action takes place in the timber-framed conservatory with its dark wood floors, leather seating and reclaimed furniture. Merrett's cooking has an eclectic slant, although it remains user-friendly and accessible. There are lots of Mediterranean touches in - say - panzanella salad with with seared tiger prawns, tomato and basil or fillet of wild bream with summer vegetable minestrone, spinach and Ricotta gnocchi, but he also comforts the palate with aged rib-eye steak and triple-cooked chips followed by bread-and-butter pudding.
The wine list is an off-the-wall thriller. Note that the Victoria is also open from 9.00am in the morning for tea, coffee and homemade cakes.
