Review on Wig & Pen by The Milestone
The Wig & Pen in the heart of Sheffield City Centre opened towards the end of 2010, overlooking Georgian Paradise Square it's the second venture from the team behind the successful Milestone gastro pub. The pub is set over two floors with a welcoming restaurant, bar and private dining rooms, perfect for a leisurely meal or for a quiet drink.
The kitchen runs in tandem with the seasons and there's a real dedication to local produce, they even produce their own rare breed of pigs born and raised in Sheffield. Other meat is free range and comes from local farms, game is sourced from nearby moors, fish from day catches off the British coasts and they also offer a barter system to local allotment owners for their supplies of surplus produce.
Typically on the evening menu you could choose a starter of chicken liver parfait, chamomile panna cotta, balsamic jelly, compressed grape and chicken skin or Hay smoked salmon, Yorkshire beetroot, cucumber and like meringue with chorizo powder. Main courses usher in seared duck breast, confit of the leg, potato fondant, duck skin crackling and baby carrots or smoked haddock fishcake, pea and pancetta fricassee. Desserts are all made fresh in house such as mango marshmallow, passion fruit parfait, coconut and peppered mango jelly or Black forest mousse, macerated cherries, cherry sorbet and honey comb.
There is an excellent wine list which they import including a wide range of half bottles, a well-crafted cocktail menu, together with Sheffield's largest and most select whiskey selection.
