Review on Tigh an Eilean Hotel
Tigh an Eilean - 'the house opposite the island' - is a converted pub in a tiny Highland hamlet by the shores of Loch Torridon. The name hardly does justice to the hotel or its surroundings, since this is an idyllic, charmingly run retreat surrounded by some of Scotland's most lovely scenery.
The kitchen makes exemplary use of abundant local produce: fish is delivered to the door each day and it might end up as fillet of cod on crushed peas with tapenade, a risotto of Loch Torridon langoustines with langoustine broth and fresh herbs, or seared organic salmon with crème fraîche and beetroot.
Away from the sea, you can also expect things like a salad of smoked venison, herb-crusted rack of local lamb and pork tenderloin with mustard sauce. Chocolate and Macadamia nut cake often shows up on the list of desserts, alongside a galette of raspberry cranachan or iced lemon parfait. France is the major contributor to the manageable wine list.
