Review on Hanoi Café
There's a homespun, low-key feel to Shoreditch's Hanoi Café a casual Vietnamese café, one of a clutch that have sprung up in the neighbourhood of late. It's a family affair, prices are remarkably cheap the food is mostly authentic.
Look for the so-called 'sidewalk dishes', distinctive versions of snacks served on street stalls in Vietnam. Noodle soups are a feature, not only the ubiquitous pho but also chicken with glass noodles and duck with bamboo vermicelli. There are also 'bun' dishes ranging from grilled pork belly to sauté bean curd with vermicelli, roast peanuts, fresh herbs and tangy sauce.
More substantial dishes include ga cari (Vietnamese chicken curry) as well as spicy pork with aubergines. Added to this are some less familiar items (stir-fried squid with mustard greens) and a few specialities for vegetarians such as water spinach with yellow beans and chilli.
