Review on Viet Grill
Part of the vibrant ethnic restaurant scene in Shoreditch, London's 'Little Hanoi', the Viet Grill a canteen-style eatery has been given a sleek look with dark wood, exotic patterned wallpaper and birdcages hanging in the draped windows. It's an eminently appealing setting for reasonably priced food that sets out to excite the palate with all manner of tantalising flavours.
The kitchen mixes staples from Vietnam's street stalls with high-wire creations typical of Ho Chi Minh City's top dining destinations. Among the starters might be classic banh xeo (Vietnamese 'pizza') and 'feudal' roasted beef, alongside lime leaf-scented quail and lotus steam salad, while the repertoire also extends to hot-and-sour soup, spring and summer rolls, and one-plate dishes such as pho and pot-simmered prawns on steamed rice.
Grills and roasts form the backbone of the main courses, from Campfire sirloin steak or 'Saigon torch' pork belly to slow-cooked Mekong catfish in claypot or pan-seared basa fish with lemongrass and turmeric. The wine list is an intriguing, 'grown-up' selection hand-picked by wine guru Malcolm Gluck to match the delicacy of the food.
