Review on The Manor House Inn

Chris and Moira Brown have been at the tiller of this remote country inn-with-rooms since 1997, and continue to run the Manor House in exemplary style. Despite the out-of-the-way location – in a tiny hamlet just off the A68 (hence the web address!) – the pub makes much of its idyllic surroundings overlooking the windswept Derwent Valley.

Log fires burn in winter and there are real ales on tap, but most attention focuses on the food. Light dishes and pub grub favourites (Cumberland sausages and mash, steak and ale pie) are bolstered by an extensive blackboard of specials including warm bacon and mangetout salad, Cajun-blackened salmon with salsa, and roast duck breast with roasted plum and piquant sauce, followed by fig and almond cake.

The Browns have recently added an on-site deli/farm shop (Brown's @ The Manor) to their business, with all kinds of homemade produce on offer: their sticky toffee pudding has – apparently – travelled as far as New Zealand! The 50-bin wine list offers decent drinking at reasonable prices.

    Birthday weekend

We have had an absolutely fabulous stay weekend of the 8-3 -2013. The Landlord Chris and his Partner made us feel welcome right from the minute we walked through the door. The rooms where clean and the food exceptional good. We would love to return and wish both of them every success in the future. Regards The Keegan's, Grimes and 10 Toast Cooper xx
