Review on Hotel Riviera
A 'grande dame' among Sidmouth's hotels, the Riviera naturally takes its inspiration from the South of France and the Côte 'd'Azur. Its imperious Regency stone façade dominates the scene, although the views are of Lyme Bay rather than the Med. Inside, it puts on a formal traditional English show - especially in the chintzy restaurant overlooking the water.
The kitchen sends out an array of broadly based international dishes, mostly rooted in the European tradition. Expect ham hock and flageolet bean terrine with pineapple compote, ribeye steak and roast rack of lamb with baby spinach, ratatouille and rosemary jus followed by profiteroles and other desserts from the trolley. Light meals are served in the Regency Bar and on the terrace during summer months.
