Formerly Southall's Hotel Iccon, the trendily designed Mehfil describes itself as 'an inspired fusion of old-world elegance with distinctly contemporary energy and glamour' - One of its greatest assets is the equally elegant Mehfil Restaurant, so – if you're staying in the hotel and don't fancy exploring Southall's myriad cafés and neighbourhood eating places – you can satisfy any cravings for classy Indian without leaving base.

The menu is a comfortingly familiar mix of mostly North Indian dishes, but cooked and served with panache. Perk up your appetite with starters such as deep-fried fish amritsari, tandoori king prawns tinged with saffron or paneer shashlik (Indian cheese grilled with peppers and onions) before embarking on chicken methi with fenugreek, rogan josh or garlicky prawn masala. Drink lassi or beer.

By all accounts, the mood is cranked up several gears on Friday and Saturday when the music gets louder and drink prices are lowered.
