Review on Kuti's Brasserie
A doorman in full ceremonial regalia is often on hand to welcome visitors to Kuti's Brasserie, a venue that is reckoned to be Southampton's most exclusive and exciting Indian restaurant with a menu created by Ravi Rao, former sous chef of Michelin-starred Vineet Bhatia in Chelsea. Located on Southampton's Royal Pier, it features a stylish contemporary décor and luxury fittings.
Start with a glass of chaas (diluted lassi flavoured with different herbs and spices) before considering the long list of appetisers, which runs from samosas and kebabs to bhel puris and laheriki machi (a fish cutlet sautéed with green chillies, garlic and coriander). Main courses include several duck dishes and seafood (including ayre, the king of Bangladeshi fish); also check out the chef's specials such as 'sally lamb' (a fruity Parsee dish garnished with crisp straw potatoes) and 'janglee Bengal chicken' with a mango-based sauce.
Lunchtime and weekend buffets are worth knowing about, and the global wine list includes some bottles from India (including Omar Khayam 'Champagne').
