Review on Gimbals
In its time, this lively, well-supported bistro called Gimbals has done service as a tobacconists, cake shop and antiques dealer, but these days it puts on a smart modern face and succeeds in pulling in regular punters from as far away as Manchester.
It's simply and modestly done out, service is swift, prices are fair and the food has plenty of life and vigour. Europe contributes most of the inspiration, whether it's an open lasagne of Dolcelatte and mushrooms or roast duck breast with a compote of cherries, shallots and honey; you can also expect to see a few oriental flourishes in the shape of – say – Thai-style mussels. Desserts tend to be pretty straightforward (bread-and-butter pudding or bilberry crème brûlée, for example).
