Review on Balaka
A highly productive allotment covering an acre of land at the back of the restaurant provides a constant supply of organic herbs and vegetables for the kitchen of this long-serving Indian. It's a novel idea that has earned green-fingered owner Mohammed Abdur Rouf a great deal of recognition.
The gardening theme extends to the dining room, where freshly cut, perfumed roses are used to adorn each table. Balaka's chef hails from Bengal and the menu includes a few specialities from his homeland: look for masa bangla (a take on the region's most famous seafood dish, which uses Scottish salmon instead of native 'rhol'). North Indian tandooris loom large, likewise a big battalion of curry house stalwarts from bhunas to biryanis.
Mr Rouf has recently extended his menu to include a number of Bangladeshi dishes and even a few familiar Thai specialities for good measure. There's a new branch called Di Se on Perth Road, Dundee.
