Review on The Loft Restaurant and Terrace
The Loft Restaurant and Terrace opened in July 2009 in the heart of the old St Ives' artists' quarter, a former sail loft the building has been restored to its original glory. It is situated on the first floor of the venue, a long dining room with the beamed loft ceiling painted white, an exposed brick back wall one side and windows opposite, to take in the beautiful views overlooking St Ives Bay and Godrevy Lighthouse. Simply laid glass topped tables with white upholstered and wood chairs are set on stripped wood flooring.
Menus reflect the seasons and the abundance of regional produce the area has to offer, seafood is a speciality, however carnivorous and vegetarian diners are also catered for. You might choose fresh Cornish mussels steamed in white wine, shallots and garlic finished with cream and parsley, served with fresh bread or smoked duck breast salad with toasted pine nuts and a red wine vinaigrette to begin with. Main courses follow with baked cod fillet wrapped in parma ham, set on parmesan mash with a rich thermidor sauce or a very popular choice is the Loft Shellfish Platter – an extravagant mix of king prawns, crabs claws, oysters, mussels and scallops, steamed in a white wine, garlic and saffron liquor served with bread and salad. Desserts are old favourites such as hot bread and butter pudding served with vanilla ice cream or warm sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and Cornish clotted cream.
There is a good value, comprehensive wine list featuring both New World and traditional Old World wines, with some offerings by the glass. The Loft has a fabulous heated and covered area on the decked terrace where you can dine, or just stop for a coffee or a glass of chilled wine, while taking in the panoramic views.
