Review on The Stafford's Lyttelton Restaurant
Discreetly tucked away just behind Queen's Walk, St James's, The Lyttelton Restaurant at The Stafford London by Kempinski enjoys miraculously peaceful surroundings. It gets precious little in the way of passing trade, but is still cherished by legions of devoted regulars and tourists. Much of the hotel feels like a luxurious country house in the city, with classically designed drawing rooms and a genteel restaurant, The Lyttelton has been designed to evoke the feeling of dining in a friend's home.
The kitchen deals in seasonal British cuisine in the mould of Devilled lamb's kidneys, on toast, Lyttelton fishcake with caper & parsley butter or Pork belly with petit pois a la française. A few more contemporary ideas also surface on the menu - roast suckling pig with grilled peach, crispy black pudding and cider crème fraiche or West Coast Plaice with shellfish cream & samphire, for example - but proceedings end on a traditional note with perhaps English strawberries & cream.
The Stafford is also home to the legendary American Bar, which is festooned with a riot of baseball caps, ties, flags, model aircraft and other transatlantic memorabilia donated over the last 40 years. Don't miss Ben's celebrated Martinis or the famous Stafford burgers.
