Review on The Moat House, Orangery Restaurant
Out in the country, just a short drive from Stafford and the M6, this luxuriously restored moated manor occupies an enchanting spot overlooking the Staffordshire & Worcester Canal. The original house dates back to Tudor times and once served as the village pub before being transformed into an award-winning, family-run hotel.
The Orangery Restaurant is at the heart of things, and the magnificent canopied room makes a splendid setting for fine dining. Typical offerings from the regularly changing carte might include roast quail with warm black pudding, fried quail's egg and walnut vinaigrette, monkfish on spiced couscous with curried mussels, almond flakes and coconut foam, and desserts like dark chocolate terrine with hazelnut ice cream.
An easy-going menu (including a full selection for kids) is also available in the beamed Brasserie Bar: expect braised lamb shank, balti chicken and the like. You can even eat al fresco by the lakeside.
