Review on Clos du Marquis
Once an old coaching inn on the road from London to Southampton, Clos du Marquis now offers a taste of rustic France at Stockbridge, in the heart of the Test Valley. Garth Jacobs and his wife run the place rather like a French auberge, with beams in the dining rooms, a gazebo for al fresco meals and a menu that oozes big-hearted traditional flavours. The whole place radiates charm and family bonhomie.
Open the slate with Cassolette of snails with garlic butter and herbs or perhaps lamb sweetbreads with bone marrow in a Madeira and truffle sauce before moving on to Le Cassoulet aux haricots tarbai the traditional cassoulet from Les Landes or maybe heart of boned British prime rib of beef with pepper sauce prepared for 2 persons. Desserts come in the shape of Crepes Suzette Flambé, refresh with red grapefruit and rosemary sorbet or tuck into a selection of French cheeses. Wash it all down with something punchy from the list of French regional wines.
