Review on Rasa Travancore
Part of the expanding Rasa group, this outlet stands across the road from the original on Stoke Newington Church Street. Unlike its elder sibling, it also serves meat and seafood as well as vegetarian dishes, with lots of influences from the Christian cooking of Kerala.
Nibbles come with Rasa's trademark homemade pickles and chutneys, and the full menu has stews for the Christmas and Easter festivities, tea shop snacks, classics from the 'toddy shops' and bars of the region and even famed recipes from individual families: Ms. Mariamma from Trivandrum is credited with arachu vercha meen (tilapia in a turmeric-tinged coconut sauce with tomatoes, curry leaves and mustard seeds).
Elsewhere, the choice of possibilities ranges from kathrikka (sliced aubergines in batter with tomato to chutney) to roast duck tharavu spiked with ginger. Desserts include banana dosa (a rolled pancake) and to drink there are some decent wines as well as Rasa own-label beer.
