Review on Unicorn Hotel
Standing right beside the Fosse Way, hard by the local parish church, the sturdy stone-built Unicorn Hotel has a thoroughly English feel to it, with Jacobean furniture, antique artefacts and log fires creating just the right mood in the public rooms, the bar and Shepherds Restaurant.
Light meals are served at lunchtime, but the kitchen raises its game for dinner. Locally procured ingredients are given a forthright European twist – witness roast duck breast with roast balsamic beetroot, cauliflower mash and horseradish cream or roast lamb chump with dauphinoise potatoes, spinach and rosemary jus.
On the fish front, there are some Mediterranean flourishes in the shape of steamed mussels with chorizo or monkfish wrapped in prosciutto with char-grilled courgettes and sun-blush tomatoes, while desserts could include ginger pudding with butterscotch sauce. The modest wine list is a no-nonsense, affordable collection of well-known names.
