Review on Cucina Asellina
Just a short stroll from the River Thames, Cucina Asellina is one of two restaurants housed in the luxurious ME London hotel, designed by Foster + Partners founded by Lord Norman Foster. Located on the Strand the hotel is on the former site of the Gaiety Theatre and Strand Music Hall and more recently Marconi House, where the BBC first broadcasted music.
With its modern Italian dishes and décor the restaurant mirrors the popular Asellina set in the Hotel Gansevoort in downtown New York. Cucina Asellina is decked out in a chic and glamorous style with rich brown leather banquettes set against wood tables and cream coloured chairs on polished concrete flooring. Divided by a wall displaying bottles of wine, there is also a bar with high stools where you can enjoy a pre-dinner drink or cocktail.
Executive chef is Barry Vera, Yorkshire born and second generation Italian, an accomplished cookery author who honed his skills at UK restaurants such as Le Pont de la Tour, Quaglino's and Cantina del Ponte. Typical starters on the menu are beef carpaccio, pickled vegetables, parmigiano, watercress or calamari fritti, tomato relish and fresh marjoram. Main courses take in bitter chocolate pappardelle, braised wild boar and cannonau or grilled branzino, saffron fregola and shell fish ragu.
The restaurant is open from early morning for coffee and breakfast, through to all day dining including cichetti and cocktails before dinner.
