Review on Hamnavoe
Hamnavoe (or 'haven bay') was the old Norse word for Stromness - a fitting title for this cottagey little restaurant specialising in the catch from the local fishing boats. It does great service by feeding holidaymakers and locals alike on a diet of gloriously fresh piscine delights.
Menus vary depending on the contents of the haul, but everything is cooked with simple, no-frills enthusiasm. Typical offerings might include prawn tails in garlic butter, whole grilled sole, peppered monkfish and grilled halibut with lemon and herb butter; there's generally something for meat eaters and vegetarians as well (grilled sirloin steak or Provençal vegetable tarte Tatin, for example).
Desserts could range from traditional clootie dumpling to caramelised apple tart, and it's also worth investigating the fine Orkney cheeses. Note that opening times may vary during the winter months, so ring to check details beforehand.
