Review on Anchor Inn

'A little bit of heaven anchored in Fenland' is how Paddy Burt described this seventeenth-century pub/restaurant-with-rooms, some 7 miles from Ely. Remotely situated in bleak country by the New Bedford River (actually a straight canal), the Anchor was built to provide lodgings and sustenance for workers draining the Fens.

Inside are pine tables on uneven floors, antique prints, flickering gas lamps on the walls and blazing log fires, and the kitchen still ploughs an imaginative seasonal furrow. Grilled dates wrapped in bacon with mustard sauce is a fixture, but the menu also runs to Denham Estate venison with celeriac and apple rémoulade, baked fillet of sea bass on crushed new potatoes with orange and rosemary reduction and award-winning pear and Parmesan tarte Tatin, along with unusual British farmhouses cheeses.

Some lighter dishes are offered at lunchtime, while on Sundays the menu is now more flexible (for those who don't want a full three course meal, although traditional roasts are still the highlight). The Anchor is also noted for its East Anglian real ales and sports an auspicious, global wine list, which is peppered with intriguing possibilities.

Lovely food, lovely calm place, enjoy

The food was imaginative without being fussy or pretentious, made from delicious ingredients to a very high standard, it was surprising and satisfying at the same time. It was one of the best meals I have eaten, and far better than most London restuarants. The place itself has a calm, soothing feel to it, like the Fens themselves. The staff are polite but warm and are attentive without being intrusive. I had thought to just spend an hour there for lunch, but we spent nearly two and a half hours enjoying one of the most delicious and relaxing lunches we have had. The decor may be a bit Spartan for some people but its lack of ostentation and the gentle atmosphere of the place made it very special for me. A great and unusual treasure.

    Graduation Dinner

This was a Graduation Dinner for my Husband's brother. Seven of us in total. We travelled approximately 40 miles to this little gold mine. We weren't sure if we were in the right place but found The Anchor down a little lane nestled in amongst fields and trees.
What a fantastic surprise we had. My husband and I both enjoy good food and will happily travel a fair distance for it. We were extremely impressed first of all with the service and all the staff as they were all very polite and cheerful and it was clear to see they enjoyed their jobs which is always a good sign. The food was absolutely excellent. I have to say The Anchor is by far the best restaurant I have eaten at. There was a good variety of dishes on the menu, they all sounded lovely and it was difficult to choose what to have. I had the Seared Tuna with mixed salad and Caper Berries. My Husband had the Fillet Steak with Jenga Chips, he says it was a superb cut of meat and both meals were cooked to perfection. My Husband and I would love to come back again to try some of the other dishes to see what else we are missing out on.
