Review on Rose & Crown
These days, the Rose & Crown is more bistro than pub, although it still wears the trappings of traditional Yorkshire hostelry. A family run venture it stands in a pleasant village midway between Helmsley and York.
The bar still looks welcoming and old fashioned, but the adjoining dining room has been given a lick of paint and there are some new etchings on its walls. Fish is one of the kitchen's specialities, so expect dishes like mussels in white wine cream and garlic, roast Whitby cod with Toulouse sausage and haricot bean cassoulet, lobster Thermidor and cold seafood platters on the blackboard menu.
Meat eaters are also given ample choice (braised ham rillettes, loin of lamb with pea and mint risotto, for example), while desserts are firmly in the crème brûlée/sticky toffee pudding mould. Yorkshire real ales and a very creditable wine list with 14 offered by the glass.
