Review on Augustus
Augustus is a bistro style restaurant located in a private courtyard, not far from the main street in Taunton. It is jointly owned by Yorkshireman Richard Guest, the former Michelin-starred chef who headed the kitchen of the Castle for more than a decade and Cédric Chirrosel who also worked at the Castle as restaurant manager. This friendly gem of a neighbourhood restaurant is said to have taken its name Augustus from Roald Dahl's character in Willy Wonka.
Menus are designed around the highest quality seasonal produce, sourced from local suppliers where possible. Look for smoked eel and scrambled egg with brioche or duck liver on toast with calvados cream amongst the starters. Main courses follow suit with roast rump of lamb with butter beans and Provençale vegetables or maybe roast plaice with smoky bacon, gnocchi and greens. Desserts bring on board delights like chocolate torte with a Pixford cherry compote or vanilla panacotta with Nynehead strawberries and honeycomb crunch.
Service provided by Cédric is knowledgeable with a friendly and relaxed vibe and the menu offers excellent value to diners.
