Review on The Royal an Lochan
Formerly the Royal Hotel, this enterprising venture sits just yards from the shores of Loch Fyne overlooking the Cowal Peninsula and the Kyles of Bute. The old Victorian stone house has been given an facelift and - thanks to some neat re-invention - it is now puts on the style with real panache.
The McKie family has established a reliable network of trusted local suppliers who can provide everything from diver-caught scallops to wild venison (stalked by a certain Winston Churchill). Their restaurant menu is brief and offers trendy ideas including scallops with black pudding and shallot purée or a trio of sea bass, monkfish and turbot with tagliatelle, baby gems and parsley.
Fans of game might be tempted by pigeon with Feta and watermelon, while raspberry cranachan is a favourite way to finish. The McKies also run An Lochan in the Broomhill district of Glasgow (where daughter Claire cooks), and have recently opened a third outlet in Tormaukin, Perthshire.
