Review on Brumus Bar & Restaurant, Haymarket Hotel
Right next door to the Haymarket Theatre in the heart of the West End, this impressive, recently opened hotel is 'new London' personified. The imposing John Nash exterior has been preserved, but inside it it is boldly eclectic with echoes of the Raj adding some exotic touches to the flashy bar and public areas.
Brumus restaurant looks equally dressed-up with pink walls and eye-catching pink dog motifs on the chair backs. The kitchen deals in predominantly North Italian cuisine based on carefully sourced seasonal produce. Starters of veal loin with tuna mayonnaise (vitello tonnata) or octopus carpaccio with a baccala (salt cod) fritter and capers give way to orecchiette with spicy pork sausage and broccoli or green pea risotto and courgette flowers. Straightforward main courses might take in char-grilled salmon with asparagus and salsa verde or calf's liver with sage and Gorgonzola potatoes, while desserts are mostly in the classic tiramisù/pannacotta mould.
