Review on MacCallums Oyster Bar
A cleverly converted building on Troon harbour is the setting for this unfussy eating place devoted to the joys of seafood. Owners John and James MacCallum also run a wet fish business in Glasgow, so top-notch supplies are guaranteed. Oysters, langoustines, mussels and lobsters all put in an appearance, alongside other species ranging from hake to halibut. The kitchen keeps things simple by offering uncomplicated, unadorned dishes such as Cullen skink, crab claws with saffron and basil mayonnaise, seared scallops with celeriac purée or baked salmon with Thai spices and pak choi.
Fish and chips is on the menu at lunchtime and there are a few token offerings for those who crave something meaty (pot-roast poussin with honey-glazed vegetables, for example). Homely desserts such as sticky toffee pudding round things off and there are some quaffable fish-friendly wines to match the food.
