Review on Regency Restaurant at Macdonald Leeming House
Once the private home of the Bolton family, this 200-year-old Lakeland retreat is surrounded by 22 acres of lush gardens and woodland running down to the shores of Ullswater.
Mirrors and chandeliers create a gentrified mood in the traditionally appointed Regency Restaurant, where diners can enjoy a wide-ranging repertoire of classic and modern dishes in the Anglo-French style.
A few Scottish touches surface here and there, as in homemade haggis with neeps and tatties, whisky and tarragon sauce or Isle of Mull Cheddar and pinenut fritters with tomnato and herb sauce, but main courses stay closer to home. Slow-roast Lakeland lamb comes with all manner of accompaniments including redcurrant stuffing, homemade mint jelly and Burgundy-laced gravy, while grilled salmon is set on parsnip mash with basil butter and asparagus spears. Grandma Potter's steamed sponge pudding and passion fruit parfait on blackcurrant coulis are typical desserts.
