Review on St John's Tavern
A cracking gastro pub that really brightens up a down-at-heel street in a down-at-heel neighbourhood, St John's is a vast place noted for its beautiful gold ceiling, weird portraits on the walls and mighty helpings of food with bags of flavour.
The menu is written up on a blackboard and it changes every day, but some dishes stay on everyone's lips: the chick pea and chorizo soup, the pork, black pudding and caper terrine, and the beef, Guinness and mustard pudding laced with pickled walnuts - all have their devotees.
Other tempting possibilities might include cockles and mussels with spring onions and bacon, monkfish wrapped in Serrano ham with squid ink risotto, and splendid desserts such as Bakewell tart with raspberries and clotted cream, pineapple Pavlova and pannetone bread pudding with custard. The imaginative wine list doesn't let the side down, either.
