Review on Hostaria da Franz
Hostaria da Franz is a family owned trattoria in the Castello area of Venice, a fifteen minute stroll from Saint Mark Square. The restaurant takes its name from a young soldier Franz Habeler, who turned the former rope shop into a restaurant serving fish and wine he purchased from local farmers and fishermen.
Chef Franco Gasparini and his son Maurizio have made this cosy eatery one of the most well regarded fish restaurants in Venice. Expect ultra-fresh seafood, cooked with culinary intelligence and diversity, such as grilled bass with herbs, radish and fennel purée, Venetian sardine with onion and raisins or breaded palumbo. Desserts are equally inviting choose blueberry flan with apricot sauce or the chocolate mousse. Hostaria da Franz boasts an exceptional wine cellar to complement the food. When the weather is warm there is a splendid terrace along the canal for dining al fresco.
