Review on The Anchor
Mark and Sophie Dorber are the enthusiastic, knowledgeable and incredibly laid-back duo behind the re-born Anchor at Walberswick and they have turned it into something quite special. Mark made his name as 'beer guru' at the platinum-standard White Horse in Parsons Green, London SW6 and his crusading enthusiasm for food and drink points up everything that goes on here - and that includes a new 'beer academy'.
The wine list is a fascinating collection from Adnams (just across the water in Southwold) and it's peppered with organic and biodynamic representatives. Beer is also taken very seriously, and each dish on the menu is listed with a recommended brew: try a bottle of Orval Trappist beer with moules marinière, Schlenkerla Rauchbier to go with ham, bubble 'n' squeak and poached egg, or a pint of Explorer as the accompaniment to a plate of mixed charcuterie.
Elsewhere on the food front, Sophie Dorber puts the emphasis on free-range, organic and local produce including home-grown stuff from the allotment behind the pub, fish from the East Suffolk boats and superb bread from a nearby bakery. The results could include warm duck salad on celeriac rémoulade, wild mushroom risotto cake with Stilton cream and mixed leaves, and lavender pannacotta.
