Review on Marriott Hanbury Manor, Zodiac Restaurant
Set in 220 acres of Hertfordshire parkland only 25 miles north of London, Hanbury Manor and Zodiac Restaurant near Ware once served as a convent school, although it's now a fully fledged, luxurious hotel complete with a PGA championship golf course, spa and country club.
The baronial splendour of the Oak Hall is in stark contrast to the creamy white opulence of the Zodiac Restaurant, which was originally designed as a summer drawing room for the Hanbury family. Its name comes from the signs of the zodiac painted onto the ceiling, although the real stars are now the ambitious contemporary dishes send out by the talented kitchen brigade.
Complexity is the name of the game, witness specialities like a terrine of foie gras wrapped in duck prosciutto with 'apple green' asparagus lasagne, hay-braised rack of suckling pig or grilled John Dory on aubergine and orange purée, followed by carpaccio of pineapple with ginger and honey ice cream. Zodiac also hosts regular dining events, ladies lunches, piano concerts and gourmet dinners. The terrace is ideal for ideal al fresco lunches in summer.
