Review on Restaurant 23 @ The Balmoral

Currently the 'hot ticket' in Warrenpoint, this venture is from seasoned Irish restaurateurs Raymond and Andrea McArdle. It's situated in the seafront boutique Balmoral Hotel in Warrenpoint (often dubbed the 'Gateway to the Mourne Mountains'). Raymond decided he wanted to become a Chef from a young age and set out a plan to work for the best this country could produce. Spending Comis Chef learning with Paul Rankin he then moved on to work with Michael Deane for seven years progressing through the ranks to become Head Chef at Deane's Belfast. Raymond had a vital role not only running a successful restaurant but in helping gain a Michelin Star and three AA Rosettes at this time. Raymond has now returned home to his roots as Head Chef and Restaurant Director of Restaurant 23 at Balmoral, Warrenpoint.

The racy line-up of starters might include baked tandoori chicken wings with mint natural yoghurt while mains could range invitingly from grilled spiced chicken kebabs with Asian noodles, curry oil & soy dressing to crisp local cod with lemon & pepper crumb, rooster potato wedges & peas à la Française. To finish there are clever desserts such as a trio of Valrhona chocolate mousse, ice cream & opera gateau or passion fruit cheesecake with raspberry sorbet & passion fruit curd.

    most enjoyable lunch

We were out for a Sunday drive and headed to the Mournes and continued on the costal roué to Warrenpoint we spotted Bistro 23 as we passed by and recognised it from the Great British Menu series which we had watched and supporting Raymond all the way, So after a walk round the Town we went to Bistro 23 fro Lunch We were shown to a table by very polite and courteous staff the Restaurant is modern and beautifully decorated our drinks order taken and left us the menu. I had a starter of Roast celeriac and white onion soup which was so tasty and a hot fresh roll my wife usually does not have a starter as she enjoys her mains and would have a desert, I chose the slow cooked Dromara beef it melted in your mouth my wife had the roasted chicken she was unable to finish it as she is a small eater so I had a piece of it and it was so succulent and moist if you are down in the Newcastle area continue on out the costal route to Warren point and stop of at Bistro 23 or better still give them a call first to make sure you get in and have a lovely meal you wont be disappointed.
