Review on La Palma on the Mall
A family business through-and-through, with senior members in the kitchen and their siblings running the show out front, La Palma occupies a strikingly restored and redesigned Georgian townhouse on Waterford's Mall. A snazzy cocktail bar occupies the ground floor, while the main restaurant is a series of vibrantly decorated rooms in the basement.
Bright colours, vivid artwork and greenery set the tone, and the menu offers an attractive mix of trattoria standards with more innovative regional ideas. Gnocchi are served with crispy duck confit, honey and Pinot Grigio cream, while seared peppered tuna comes with Tuscan potatoes, red pepper confit and citrus glaze.
Traditionalists might prefer a plate of mixed antipasti to start, before 'surf and turf' with basil mash and tomato reduction or langoustines with ginger spiced butter and rice. To finish, look for 'baci sorrento' (moist chocolate and Amaretto cake) or Guinness and orange ice cream. The owners have transformed their original Parnell Street premises into Espresso - a family joint specialising in pizzas and pasta.
