Review on The Horse & Stables
The Horse & Stables, formerly the Horse Bar & Restaurant, a neighbourhood boozer opposite Lambeth North tube station is now a thoroughbred bar and restaurant with dark panelling, dappled walls and a spectacular 'library' room upstairs for private bashes.
At lunchtime, the place does a roaring trade in food thanks to a menu that promises Mediterranean salads, pork and apple sausages with mash, tortilla wraps with shredded duck, and cold poached salmon with asparagus and watercress. Also check the list of daily specials (perhaps smoked haddock kedgeree with coriander mayonnaise) and leave room for lush desserts such as spiced apple tarte Tatin or Belgian waffles with ice cream and honey.
In the evening, the place becomes a throbbing bar, with food confined to tapas and mezze sharing platters plus a few more substantial offerings like blackened Cajun chicken with coconut rice. The line-up of spirits is 'awesome' and there are some decent wines, too.
