Review on The Crown Hotel
Overlooking a tranquil, tree-lined green known as The Buttlands, this seriously refurbished sixteenth-century coaching inn is long-serving fixture of Wells-next-the-Sea and draws regular crowds of locals, holidaymakers and business people. As befits its location a few minutes stroll from the beach, the Crown is an open-minded, family-friendly venue with facilities to match.
Lunches and light suppers are served in the beamed bar: try the Crown Black Slate (a sampler of European and Asian appetisers served on a dramatic black slate), or go for a plate of Brancaster oysters, Welsh rarebit or something hearty like marinated pork belly with stir-fried noodles.
The stylish conservatory restaurant opens for more formal evening meals, when the kitchen shows what it can conjure up from carefully sourced local produce and exotic ingredients. Smoked haddock omelette with cucumber relish and roast partridge breasts with confit legs, crushed potato and wild mushrooms crop up alongside steamed cod with ginger, lemongrass and lime, Tiger prawns with watermelon curry, and Thai-marinated duck breast with seared scallops and chilli jam. Star anise and ginger brûlée sustains the Asian theme, or you might prefer 'Mumma Coubrough's' apple and walnut pudding.
