Review on The Crown at Wells, Anton’s Bistrot
Situated in Wells' historic market place and overlooked by the magnificent world-famous cathedral, the Crown is a fifteenth-century Grade II-listed building with all manner of attributes.
Anton's Bistrot takes its name from a renowned local cartoonist, whose creations appeared regularly in Punch: examples of his work line the walls of this flexible, family-friendly venue. Food is served right through the day: proceedings kick off with breakfast and morning coffee, before lunch, 'afternoon delights' and full evening meals.
The dinner menu has a colourful Mediterranean accent, witness grilled baby asparagus with a sun-blush tomato and basil butter, fillet of sea bass and king scallops on porcini and runner bean risotto, and pot-roast lamb shank in Rioja and roasted garlic sauce.
There are also a few worldwide forays for crispy duck confit on a rösti with pickled red cabbage, caramelised apples and Griottine cherries or Thai basil stir fry with teriyaki-roasted tofu and noodles, while desserts could feature baked vanilla cheesecake.
